🎓My Story & Academic Journey

Vanessa Macamo, Fulbright Scholar | Disability Rights Advocate | Inclusive Education Researcher

My journey as an educator, researcher, and disability rights advocate is shaped by my experience as educator, early childhood educator, principal, owner of a pre -school and my deep commitment to advancing inclusive education and equity in Mozambique and across the Global South.

Over the years, I have woven together academic research, community advocacy, and creative media to amplify marginalized voices and challenge systemic barriers. What follows is a detailed account of the experiences, milestones, and collaborations that have shaped my work and continue to guide my mission for social change.

Academic Background & Research

I am a Fulbright Scholar currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Special Education at the University of Arizona.

As a first-generation college student and mother, I am deeply committed to connecting my personal and professional experiences with my academic work.

My research draws on Critical Policy Analysis, Critical Disability Studies, and Global South perspectives to investigate how inclusive education policies are constructed, implemented, and experienced in early childhood settings in Mozambique.

I aim to enhance my academic impact in both Mozambique and global contexts by examining how policies, practices, and educational leadership training can support inclusive education for children with disabilities across the Global South and North. I am also committed to exploring how Mozambique’s National Education System can be assessed and adapted to fully integrate inclusive educational practices.

Early Childhood Leadership & Inclusive Media

Before beginning my doctoral studies, I served as Director of Early Childhood Care at the Banco de Moçambique Children’s Centre and founded O Cantinho da Sissi, an inclusive preschool and educational TV program.
In 2025, I launched Inclusive Voices in Action, a national educational podcast and disability rights initiative in Mozambique, developed as part of my doctoral research. This podcast, available on my YouTube channel, addresses disability rights, educational access, scholarship opportunities, and leadership development for youth.

Collective Work & Advocacy

  • I am an active member and facilitator in the Global Souths/Disability Studies Collective, contributing to collaborative scholarship and inclusive methodologies.

  • In addition to academic collaborations, I contribute regularly to Jornal Notícias, one of Mozambique’s most widely read and trusted national newspapers especially valued by government officials and decision-makers. I invest in publishing here because of its broad accessibility, including distribution to remote areas, ensuring my advocacy reaches diverse audiences.

  • I also serve as an editor and guest writer for Masoko, a Mozambican community newspaper, where I promote access to information and create a platform for discussion on critical social issues. Through my articles, I aim to influence change and stimulate public dialogue on disability rights, social inclusion, and broader community development. While my work often focuses on the lives and rights of persons with disabilities, its purpose extends to collective societal transformation, challenging stereotypes, promoting equity, and encouraging policies that benefit entire communities.

  • Alongside my print and community media work, I use my YouTube channel as a digital platform to share Inclusive Voices in Action podcast episodes, interviews, and educational videos. These focus on disability rights, inclusive education, and opportunities for youth, making my advocacy accessible to both national and global audiences.

Mentorship & Professional Roles

  • I serve as a mentor in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Consortium (UROC) at the University of Arizona, a summer research and graduate preparation program housed within the Graduate College. In this role, I mentor a cohort of 12 undergraduate students, 10 psychology/education majors (with an interest in clinical or school psychology) and 2 STEM majors as part of their year-long participation in UROC’s AWARDS and UROC-PREP cohorts.

  • Beyond the classroom, I am also the Executive Director of Nakholwa Serviços in Mozambique, an organization dedicated to building an inclusive, diverse, and engaged academic and professional community. Through Nakholwa Serviços’ mentorship program, I have guided approximately 15 students,  including two who have secured scholarships to study in the United States and one in Ireland. The program’s mission is to empower Mozambican youth, women, and professionals by fostering confidence, providing academic and career guidance, and supporting their long-term aspirations.

  • In addition, I contribute to graduate student success at the University of Arizona as a Graduate Orientation Panelist. In this capacity, I share insights on academic life, professional development, and the transition into graduate study, offering practical strategies and encouragement to help incoming graduate students navigate their programs and achieve their goals.
