Sunday Message | Let It Go ❤️
LinkedIn often brings us together around research, professional achievements, networking, and career journeys. Today, I want to use this space for something equally important, a reflection on the human side of our professional and academic lives. So, occasionally, I may share a Sunday reflection, a thought or experience that invites me to reflect beyond the next accomplishment or deadline.
Today, after church, one message stayed with me: Let it go.
I recognize and respect that we all have different beliefs, faiths, religions, and ways of understanding life. This is simply a reflection inspired by a message I received today, one that made me think about myself, my family, and also about our lives as graduate students. Sometimes when we think about giving, we immediately think about money or material things. But giving can be much simpler than that.
Sometimes it is giving someone our time.
It may be listening to a student who is going through a difficult moment.
It may be listening to a colleague who needs someone to hear their presentation. It may be checking on someone. It may simply mean being present.
It may also mean letting go of those things we believe we cannot do because we don't have time, because we are always busy, and realizing that sometimes we can simply give a little bit of ourselves.
Something else from today's message stayed with me: life cannot be only about checking boxes.
Finish this. ☑️
Submit the dissertation. ☑️
Complete the assignment. ☑️
Meet the deadline. ☑️
Move to the next responsibility. ☑️
Yesterday, my daughter reminded me of this in the simplest way. We were all at home, but I was on my computer trying to finish some work. She said: “We are all at home, but we are not talking.” I stopped and said, “Okay, let’s talk.” Then my son asked: “Do we have a specific topic to talk about?” I just laughed. We all laughed. No. We didn't need a topic. I closed my computer, and we talked for a while. Eventually, I went back to my computer. 😊
But for that moment, I was present. That small moment made today's message even more meaningful to me.
Perhaps letting go is not always about giving something up. Sometimes it is about letting go of the need to finish one more thing, letting go of being constantly busy, letting go of the idea that every moment needs a purpose or an agenda. Sometimes it is simply about making room to listen, to connect, to care, to love, and to be present. Because sometimes the most meaningful thing we can give someone is not money or something material. Sometimes, the gift is simply our time.
As a new week begins, I leave myself, and you, with one question:
What do you need to let go of to make room for what truly matters?
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead.
I Believe. 🦋
